TROOPS ARREST TWO CRIMINAL HERDERS DURING FARMLAND PROTECTION PATROL IN MAKURDI

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have intensified efforts to safeguard farmers and farmlands during the harvest season, arresting two herders who allegedly trespassed and destroyed crops in Makurdi, Benue State.

The incident occurred on 20 November 2025 when troops deployed at Zongo Akiki were conducting a routine farm protection patrol. The soldiers intercepted the suspects after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated community farmlands, resulting in significant damage to crops.

A swift military intervention prevented further destruction and a potential clash between the herders and local farmers. The two suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue ahead of possible legal action.

The Force Commander, Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and reassured residents of sustained efforts to protect farmlands throughout the harvest period. He advised the public against resorting to self-help or violence during disputes, warning that such actions escalate tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.

Major General Gara also cautioned herders against violating laws or engaging in activities that threaten security, emphasising the need for mutual respect and order.

He reaffirmed OPWS’s commitment to creating a safe and enabling environment for farming and other legitimate economic activities in Benue and neighbouring states.

The statement was issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu of Headquarters, JTF Operation Whirl Stroke, on 25 November 2025.
