Sabuwa LG Chairman Attends Wedding Of Bandits’ Children Weeks After Peace Pact
The Executive Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Area in Katsina State, Engr. Sagir Tanimu, has sparked debate after attending the wedding ceremony of children of suspected bandits, only weeks after a peace pact was entered into with the armed groups.
The wedding, which took place recently in the area, comes against the backdrop of a fragile peace initiative aimed at curbing years of insecurity, kidnappings, and cattle rustling in Katsina’s troubled communities.
Observers have expressed concern that despite the peace accord, the bandits have yet to surrender their weapons, raising doubts over the sincerity and sustainability of the agreement.
While some residents defended Chairman Tanimu’s presence at the ceremony as an effort to consolidate trust and foster reconciliation, others criticized the move as premature, stressing that reconciliation without disarmament could further embolden armed groups.
Civil society groups and security analysts have urged government officials to approach peace talks with caution, warning that without firm guarantees—such as surrender of arms and commitment to end hostilities—dialogue may achieve little beyond temporary ceasefires.
As of press time, the Katsina State Government has not officially commented on the chairman’s attendance.
Katsina remains one of the North-West states hardest hit by banditry, despite repeated military operations and peace efforts aimed at restoring normalcy.
