FG Moves to Relocate Mangar Community for Completion of Farin Ruwa Dam Project

…as Governor Sule calls for timely execution

The Federal Government has commenced plans to relocate Mangar community in Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State to pave the way for the completion of the Farin Ruwa Multipurpose Dam Project.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev, during a courtesy visit to Governor Abdullahi Sule at the Government House, Lafia, on Thursday. The Minister, represented by Engr. Ali Ibrahim Dallah, Director of Dams and Reservoirs, explained that the relocation has become necessary as the project has reached 42 percent completion and the dam’s water storage would eventually submerge the settlement.

“The purpose of the project is to generate 20 megawatts of hydroelectricity, provide safe drinking water, irrigation for agriculture, flood control, and create opportunities for recreation and tourism,” the Minister stated.

He highlighted that the Farin Ruwa Dam project, executed by China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), will feature a 65-metre-high embankment, 750-metre length, 73 million cubic metres water storage capacity, intake tower, spillway, discharge channel, and a 20-kilometre access road with drainage.

Engr. Utsev emphasized that consultations with stakeholders would continue to ensure a smooth resettlement process, noting that over N8 billion has been earmarked for relocation and compensation. He also commended Governor Sule for constructing the Sisin Baki-Farin Ruwa access road, which allowed contractors to mobilize to the site.

In his remarks, Governor Abdullahi Sule called for timely execution of the project, stressing the need to safeguard the livelihoods of residents who risk losing their homes and farms.

“We don’t want to relocate people and then keep them waiting endlessly for the completion of the dam. Relocation must be carefully planned to protect their means of survival,” the Governor said.

Governor Sule assured that the state government would work with federal authorities, lawmakers, and traditional rulers to fast-track the relocation exercise and project completion.

On his part, the Gom Mama, HRH Alhaji Bala Adams Zubairu, lauded Governor Sule for being the first to open up the area through road construction and pledged the community’s cooperation towards the successful completion of the dam.

The Farin Ruwa Dam project, first initiated during the administration of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, is expected to boost power generation, agriculture, and tourism upon completion.
