NATIONWIDE STRIKE, NIGERIANS REACT
Since declaration of a nationwide strike by Nigeria Labour Congress on Friday, following Federal Government inability to meet up to its demand for increased minimum wage, Nigerians have been reacting. This reaction has further heightened with recent development where Labour shuts down national grid, while flights were cancelled by Airports Authority in compliance with Labour's directive, leaving travellers stranded.
Earlier, Labour demanded for N494,000 minimum wage in view of alarming hike in prices of commodities and services, increased cost of living for Nigerian workers as a result of government policies leading to floating of the Naira and removal of subsidy, followed by corresponding rise in prices of petroleum products, electricity tariff, tuition fees for students etc.
Labour insists that increase in living wage has become necessary considering hardship faced by citizens. It points to high cost of governance amid claims for scanty resources to finance the wage they are demanding for, presented second alternative to President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government, which is to reverse fuel subsidy.
Those against Labour, though believe there is the need to press for increased living wage, stated that shutting down national grid will further add to the misery of citizens, as businesses and healthcare facilities rely hugely on electricity. Others on the other hand are of the opinion that it is the only language government understands.
Sen. Goodwill Akpabio, President of the Senate and Nigerian Governors have called for continued negotiation with Labour.
It is the believe of Nigerians that Labour's demand is outrageous, and so, it has to consider scaling down but N60,000 earlier proposed by government is grossly inadequate for workers. In the end, Ideal Reporters reliably gathered that Nigerians will only accept shifting ground by both parties in order to ease their suffering.
