FG Suspends Planned Increase In WAEC, NECO Registration Fees For 2027 Exams

The Federal Government has suspended its planned increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), pending wider consultations with key stakeholders.

The decision was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education, which disclosed that its earlier proposal for a fee review, communicated in a letter dated June 18, 2026, has been put on hold.

According to the Ministry, the proposed adjustment was necessitated by the increasing cost of organising and administering credible national examinations across the country.

However, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be suspended to allow for a more inclusive and transparent decision-making process.

The Ministry stated that it will consult with examination bodies, State Ministries of Education, school proprietors, parents, organised labour and other relevant stakeholders before reaching a final decision on any adjustment to examination registration fees.

It emphasized that no increase will be implemented until the consultation process is completed, assuring Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting the interests and welfare of students while ensuring the sustainability of the nation's examination system.
