Public Outcry Trails Death Of NSUK Final-Year Student, Renewed Calls For CCTV Installation At FMC Keffi

A wave of public concern has followed allegations of negligence and unprofessional conduct at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, with concerned citizens calling on the Federal Ministry of Health and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to urgently investigate the hospital and strengthen accountability measures.

The renewed outcry comes in the wake of the reported death of 20-year-old Abdulrahman Abdullahi, a final-year Computer Science student of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, who allegedly died after receiving treatment in the hospital's Orthopaedic Surgical Unit.

The incident has sparked grief and anger among members of the public, who described the young student's death as a tragic loss of a promising life.

Beyond the latest incident, the concerned citizens alleged that cases of patients dying after undergoing surgery and women losing their lives during childbirth have become increasingly common at the facility, raising questions about the quality of care, patient safety and professional conduct.

As part of their demands, they called on the Federal Ministry of Health, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other relevant regulatory authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.

The group also urged the management of FMC Keffi to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in surgical theatres, labour rooms and other critical hospital units to enhance transparency, discourage professional misconduct where it exists, strengthen internal oversight and improve public confidence in healthcare service delivery.

According to them, the installation of CCTV systems would provide an objective record of procedures, assist in investigations where necessary, protect both patients and healthcare professionals, and promote adherence to professional standards.

They stressed that the measure should be implemented with due regard for patient privacy, confidentiality and applicable medical ethics.

The concerned citizens appealed to the relevant authorities to act swiftly to address the concerns raised, restore confidence in the facility and prevent avoidable loss of lives.
They maintained that every patient deserves safe, professional and accountable healthcare, urging government agencies not to ignore the growing public concern surrounding the hospital.
