Nasarawa North Senatorial By-Election Commences Amid Intense Political Contest

The much-anticipated Nasarawa North Senatorial By-Election has commenced across Akwanga, Wamba, and Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State, with voters trooping to polling units to elect a new representative in the Senate.

The by-election became necessary following the demise of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented the district until his death, creating a vacancy in the upper legislative chamber.

The contest is expected to be keenly fought, with political observers focusing attention on some of the most prominent candidates in the race. They include Barrister Danladi Halilu Envulanza of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, and former member of the House of Representatives, David Emmanuel Ombugadu, among other contenders.

The election has attracted significant attention within and outside Nasarawa State, with many political analysts describing it as a potential barometer for future political contests in the state, particularly the 2027 general elections.

Beyond filling the vacant Senate seat, the outcome is expected to provide insight into the political strength and grassroots appeal of the major political parties in Nasarawa North.

The district has become even more politically strategic following the emergence of Governor Abdullahi Sule as the APC's flag bearer for the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections, making the by-election a closely watched contest with implications beyond the immediate race.

Security personnel and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were deployed across the district to ensure a smooth electoral process, while political parties and their supporters maintained a strong presence at polling centres.

As voting gets underway, residents and stakeholders are expressing hope that the exercise will be peaceful, credible, and reflective of the will of the electorate.
