Kano Emerges Best State To Raise A Family In Nigeria — SBM Intelligence Report

Kano State has been ranked as the best state in Nigeria to raise a family, according to a new report released by SBM Intelligence, a socio-political and economic research firm.

The report, titled “Where Nigerian Families Actually Thrive,” assessed living conditions and quality of life across eight states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between January and May 2026.

According to the findings, Kano emerged top in the overall ranking due to its strong performance in affordability, safety, electricity supply, and access to childcare services.

The study was based on two separate surveys — a Quality of Life Survey involving 442 respondents and a Power Survey conducted among 191 participants. Researchers examined key indicators affecting family wellbeing, including healthcare, education, housing affordability, income levels, infrastructure, electricity supply, security, and general living conditions.

SBM Intelligence noted that although average income levels in Kano may be lower compared to some commercial cities, the relatively affordable cost of living and improved public safety contributed significantly to the state’s high ranking.

The report further stated that Kano recorded some of the safest streets, easiest access to childcare, and most affordable daily living conditions among the states surveyed.

Rivers State ranked second in the assessment, driven by strong healthcare performance and family stability, while Abuja placed fourth due to high income levels and social support despite concerns over rising living costs and electricity challenges.

Cross River State ranked lowest in the survey, with respondents citing poor infrastructure, weak healthcare services, unstable electricity supply, and declining education standards as major concerns.

SBM Intelligence also linked Kano’s performance to ongoing investments in infrastructure and social development, as well as the activities of local security structures, including the state’s neighbourhood watch system.

The report has since generated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the factors that define the best environment for raising a family in the country.
