Concern Rises Over Fresh Attack On Farmer In Udenin Gida, Nasarawa

Fresh concerns have emerged over the security situation in parts of Nasarawa State following the reported attack on a farmer identified as Anini Awura by suspected herdsmen in Udenin Gida community on Monday, May 19, 2026.

According to sources from the area, the victim, who is said to be from the Agbadu clan, was reportedly attacked while fetching water from a river for chemical spraying on his farm.

Residents alleged that three suspected herdsmen approached him at the riverside and exchanged greetings with him before suddenly launching an attack as he turned to secure a gallon on his motorcycle. The assailants reportedly attacked him with cutlasses and fled the scene with his motorcycle.

The incident has heightened fears among farmers and residents who say they now live in constant anxiety, especially as the farming season intensifies.

Community members expressed worry that recurring attacks and insecurity could discourage many farmers from going to their farms, thereby threatening agricultural activities, food production and livelihoods in the affected communities.

Residents further recalled that during a previous peace and stakeholders’ engagement visit by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), Abiodun Essiet, leaders of the herders’ community had publicly committed themselves to peaceful coexistence and an end to hostilities.

However, community members lamented that the latest attack appears to contradict those commitments, alleging that the promises made during the peace meeting have not translated into lasting peace on the ground.

They further claimed that since the Nasarawa State Government intervened in the lingering crisis, no fewer than seven separate attacks have reportedly occurred in affected communities, leaving several victims severely injured and at least one person dead.

According to residents, the recurring violence suggests that one side may not be genuinely committed to allowing peace to reign despite ongoing reconciliation efforts by government and stakeholders.

They noted that the persistent insecurity is one of the major reasons many displaced residents are yet to return to their communities, as fear and uncertainty continue to dominate daily life in the area.

The latest development has also revived memories of previous violent attacks in the area which reportedly claimed about 80 lives and led to the destruction of more than 150 houses, forcing many families to flee their homes and disrupting economic activities.

Residents warned that if urgent and decisive action is not taken, the continued attacks could have severe consequences on farming activities, food production and the local economy, especially at a time when many rural communities depend heavily on agriculture for survival.

They are therefore calling on the Nasarawa State Government, security agencies and relevant authorities to strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities, ensure justice for victims and enforce peace agreements reached among the parties involved.

As of the time of filing this report, official confirmation from security authorities on the latest attack was yet to be obtained.
