Controversy Trails Naming Of NSUK Alumni Secretariat
A growing wave of concern has emerged among members of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) Alumni Association following the naming of the newly constructed National Alumni Secretariat at the institution’s main campus.
While alumni members have commended the association for delivering what has been described as a commendable and long-awaited edifice, the decision to name the Secretariat after Ambassador Yakubu Musa, Personal Liaison Officer (PLO) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has sparked dissatisfaction within the ranks.
In a statement signed by Comrade Mohammed Ayuba Oche, PhD, a concerned alumnus, members acknowledged and appreciated Ambassador Yakubu Musa for his philanthropic gesture and financial commitment toward the construction of the Secretariat. They also prayed for divine reward for his contributions.
However, the statement expressed surprise and disappointment over the decision by the Bar. Nuhu Egya-led Alumni Executive Council to rename the Secretariat, allegedly deviating from an earlier understanding that the foundation and project would be dedicated to Distinguished Senator Abdullahi Adamu, widely regarded as the founding father of Nasarawa State University.
The concerned alumni further accused the leadership of sidelining due process, alleging that no congress meeting was convened to deliberate on or approve the naming decision. They also raised concerns over a lack of transparency, noting that members have not been informed about the total donation made by Ambassador Yakubu Musa or how the funds were utilized.
According to the statement, “Accountability appears to have been shunned, while the system is gradually tilting towards a one-man show,” warning that such practices undermine the core values of alumni associations, which are meant to foster unity, progress, and inclusiveness.
The group emphasized that alumni bodies worldwide serve as platforms for development and engagement, not instruments of exclusion or domination.
They further expressed a sense of betrayal, particularly given the stature of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, stating that it was disheartening to witness a project reportedly initiated in his honour being renamed without broad consultation.
The concerned members called on the Alumni Association leadership to issue an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the naming of the Secretariat, while also addressing issues of transparency and accountability.
As of the time of filing this report, the NSUK Alumni Association leadership has yet to respond to the concerns raised.
