Al-Makura Cautions Against Early Endorsements Ahead Of APC Primaries In Nasarawa
Former Governor of Nasarawa State and North Central Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Tanko Al-Makura, has called on political actors to tread carefully and avoid actions that may breach established electoral guidelines as the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for its primaries.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lafia, Al-Makura raised concerns over emerging political developments in the state, particularly the growing discourse around early endorsements. He described such moves as premature and potentially harmful to the integrity of the party’s internal processes.
His remarks come in the wake of recent comments attributed to Governor Abdullahi Sule regarding a preferred successor, an action Al-Makura suggested could undermine due process if not properly timed.
According to the former governor, the APC is yet to officially commence the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms, making any form of endorsement at this stage inconsistent with the party’s laid-down procedures.
“I was not consulted as a key stakeholder before the announcement of a preferred successor. While such a position may reflect a personal view, the timing is questionable. The electoral process follows clear stages, and we are still at the phase where interested individuals are making their intentions known,” he stated.
Al-Makura further urged party leaders to adopt a more disciplined and lawful approach, pointing to the leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a model rooted in respect for internal democracy and due process.
The governor’s remarks on succession have since sparked mixed reactions across Nasarawa State, with party stakeholders expressing differing opinions on the appropriateness and implications of early endorsements ahead of the APC’s primary elections.
