Government Commences Peace Talks Over Deadly Udege Attacks
The Nasarawa State Government has commenced high-level peace talks following recent coordinated attacks on communities in Udege Development Area of Nasarawa Local Government Area allegedly by Fulani bandits, which reportedly claimed over 30 lives and left more than 70 houses destroyed.
The violent incidents, which also led to the loss of food items, motorcycles and other valuables, have displaced many residents, with affected victims currently taking refuge in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Loko, Onogbo, and neighbouring communities.
As part of efforts to restore calm, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule of Nasarawa State convened a peace meeting between leaders of the Eloyi, also called Afo and Fulani representatives from Udege, aimed at ending the cycle of violence and fostering peaceful coexistence.
The meeting, held at the palace of the Emir of Nasarawa, Alh. Ibrahim Usman Jibril la, brought together key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, security agencies, and government officials to chart a path towards lasting peace in the troubled area.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, the Governor stressed that violence only results in loss of lives, destruction of property, and discourages investment critical to the development of the state.
He urged the warring communities to embrace dialogue, rebuild trust, and shun all forms of hostility, warning that the government would not tolerate any further breach of peace.
The stakeholders called for the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks, as part of measures to ensure justice and deter future violence.
Speaking earlier, Secretary to the State Government, Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, said the peace initiative became necessary in view of the scale of destruction and the urgent need to restore stability, especially as the farming season approaches. He added that efforts are ongoing to provide relief and support to victims affected by the crisis.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, military, and other operatives, were commended for their role in containing the situation and restoring relative calm to the area.
