Midnight Fire Razes Shops At Nasarawa Central Motor Park, Over 200 Businesses Affected
Residents of Nasarawa community in Nasarawa Local Government Area woke up on Thursday to the disturbing news of a devastating fire outbreak at the Nasarawa Central Motor Park. The sad incident reportedly occurred at about 1:05 a.m., at a time when most residents were deep asleep.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the inferno spread rapidly through the busy commercial area, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. No fewer than eighty shops were razed, while over two hundred businesses operating within the park were severely affected. Many traders and shop owners reportedly lost virtually everything as the flames consumed goods, equipment and other valuables.
Preliminary assessments by traders and community stakeholders suggest that the financial losses from the incident are enormous. It is estimated that nothing less than three hundred million naira worth of goods, cash and other business assets may have been lost to the inferno.
As of the time of filing this report by Ideal Reporters, the source of the fire remains unknown, raising concerns among residents and business owners about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Efforts to contain the blaze were reportedly hampered by the inability of the local fire service to respond effectively. Residents who contacted the fire service stationed at the Local Government Area headquarters said officers informed them that the fire service delivery vehicle was faulty, making it impossible for them to respond to the emergency. Community members say this has been a recurring explanation whenever such incidents occur in the area.
With no immediate response from the fire service, it took the intervention of commercial pick-up van operators who volunteered their vehicles to source water from the Nasarawa River in an attempt to reduce the intensity of the raging fire. Despite their efforts, the intervention came rather late as much of the damage had already been done before the flames were eventually brought under control.
The Nasarawa Central Motor Park is known to serve as one of the major hubs of economic activity within the community, hosting numerous shops, offices and commercial outlets that support the livelihoods of hundreds of residents. With the destruction of the affected structures, economic activities in the area have now been badly crippled, leaving many families uncertain about their next source of income.
Union leaders and several affected business owners who spoke with a team from the Islamic Da’awah and Research Foundation during their visit to empathize with them and seek the implementation of cushioning measures, including long-term solutions, expressed deep pain over the magnitude of their losses. Many described the incident as a devastating setback, noting that their livelihoods were destroyed within a matter of minutes.
While lamenting their losses, some of the victims and community stakeholders also advised that the rebuilding process should not only focus on the two blocks of structures that were directly affected. They recommended that adjoining shops, many of which are currently raised in the form of makeshift containers, should also be properly restructured to create a safer and more organized commercial environment.
According to them, the presence of container-based shops and congested structures increases the risk of rapid fire spread, making it imperative that any reconstruction effort should incorporate proper planning, spacing, and modern fire-prevention and safety measures to minimize the chances of a similar tragedy in the future.
The victims appealed to government and relevant authorities for urgent intervention, particularly in the form of financial assistance and building materials, to enable them rebuild their shops and resume business.
They also called for the compassionate intervention of the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi A. Sule. The affected traders expressed hope that His Excellency, alongside other top government officials and relevant stakeholders across political and institutional divides, would rise to the occasion to provide the much-needed relief and long-term solutions.
Meanwhile, professionals and community stakeholders have further stressed that any reconstruction effort must prioritize durability, safety, and proper urban planning. They emphasized the need for improved emergency response infrastructure within the Nasarawa community, particularly the availability and readiness of functional fire service facilities.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for a responsive and well-equipped emergency management system capable of protecting lives, livelihoods, and critical economic hubs within Nasarawa State. Many residents believe that with prompt government intervention and well-planned reconstruction, Nasarawa Central Park can once again return as a vibrant centre of commerce that sustains the livelihoods of hundreds of families.
