Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf Dumps NNPP As Kano Political Shake-Up Intensifies

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a move that signals a major political realignment in the state.

The development was confirmed in a press statement issued on Friday and signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision in a formal letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, announcing his withdrawal from the party with effect from January 25, 2026.

In the letter, the Governor expressed gratitude to the NNPP for providing him a political platform and for the support he enjoyed from party leaders and members across Kano State since joining the party in 2022.

“I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey,” he said.

Governor Yusuf explained that his decision was informed by persistent internal crises rocking the party, including leadership disputes and legal battles currently before the courts. He noted that these challenges have weakened cohesion within the party and created uncertainty at both state and national levels.

“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,” the statement quoted the Governor as saying.

He stressed that the move followed careful reflection and was guided solely by the interest of the people of Kano State, adding that the decision was taken in good faith and without bitterness.

“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” he stated.

In a major political fallout from the decision, the Governor is reported to be leaving the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen across the state.

The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who commended Governor Yusuf for his achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment during his tenure.

While admitting the existence of lingering crises within the party, Zubairu said the NNPP had no choice but to accept the Governor’s resignation, describing him as one of the party’s most performing governors.

Governor Yusuf’s exit is expected to significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape in the days ahead.
