Mother Allegedly Killed by Son Laid To Rest In Suleja As Mob Lynches Suspect
The remains of Hauwa Sanusi, a 45-year-old woman allegedly killed by her son during a domestic dispute, have been laid to rest in Suleja, the headquarters of Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State, amid grief and tension in the community.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a disagreement reportedly broke out between the deceased and her 25-year-old son, Adamu Abdullahi, over family inheritance. The dispute was said to be linked to Abdullahi’s share of his late father’s property, which his mother had reportedly kept in custody to prevent misuse.
Residents said Abdullahi, who had recently returned to Suleja after a prolonged absence, allegedly attacked his mother with a knife during the argument. Her screams reportedly attracted neighbours, who rushed to the scene and found her critically injured.
An eyewitness, Ibrahim Hassan, said the suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by residents and beaten by some youths before security operatives could arrive.
“The misunderstanding was over inheritance. After their father’s death, the property was shared, but the mother kept his portion. When neighbours heard her screams and rushed in, they found her badly injured. He tried to escape but was caught and beaten,” Hassan said.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said police operatives from the ‘A’ Division in Suleja responded to a distress call at about 1:30 a.m. on December 12, 2025.
According to him, preliminary information indicated that Hauwa Sanusi was allegedly stabbed to death by her son during a misunderstanding, after which an angry mob attacked the suspect and lynched him.
He added that the bodies of both the deceased mother and son were evacuated from the scene, while the suspected weapon used in the attack was recovered. Investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the mob action.
The police command condemned the act of jungle justice and urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their hands, stressing that all criminal matters should be reported to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
