Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar Resigns On Health Grounds
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his position with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former two-term Governor of Jigawa State said he could no longer continue in office due to undisclosed health concerns. President Tinubu has formally accepted the resignation.
According to the Presidency, the President thanked Badaru for his “dedicated service to the nation” and contributions to national security since his appointment on August 21, 2023.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement released from the State House on Monday. He added that President Tinubu is expected to communicate a nominee for Badaru’s replacement to the Senate later this week.
Badaru’s exit comes at a critical moment, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency. Details of the emergency framework are expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before joining the federal cabinet. His resignation marks a significant shift within the nation’s security leadership at a time of heightened concern over nationwide security challenges.
