President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally nominated former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, following the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on Monday.
The nomination was conveyed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio in an official communication from the Presidency, seeking the Senate’s confirmation of General Musa to take charge of the Defence Ministry at a time of heightened national security challenges.
According to the State House statement signed by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed strong confidence in General Musa’s capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s defence apparatus and consolidate ongoing security reforms.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa completed his early education in the state before moving to the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria. He graduated in 1986 and immediately enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), earning a Bachelor of Science degree and receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1991.
General Musa’s career has seen him serve in several critical operational and strategic roles, including:
General Staff Officer 1, Training and Operations, HQ 81 Division
Commanding Officer, 73 Battalion
Assistant Director, Operational Requirements, Department of Army Policy and Plans
Infantry Representative, Training Team, HQ Nigerian Army Armour Corps
Deputy Chief of Staff, Training/Operations, Infantry Centre and Corps

In 2021, he was appointed Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, where he coordinated major counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations in the North-East. He later rose to become Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps before his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff in 2023.
With his nomination now before the Senate, the upper chamber is expected to subject General Musa to a confirmation screening in the coming days, after which he will assume office if approved.
