PhD Student In China Urges Consideration For Kyari And Mamu’s Release

Khalid Yusuf Tebo, a Nigerian doctoral student in China and a social media influencer from Yobe State, has called for broader consideration in the ongoing debate over the detention of high-profile figures in the country. He urged that Abba Kyari and Tukur Mamu be given the same attention as Nnamdi Kanu in discussions about release from custody.

Tebo made the appeal following recent calls by political leaders, including Omoyele Sowore and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

He noted that while Kanu is facing charges linked to treason and separatist agitation, Kyari and Mamu’s cases are different and tied to their professional contributions to the country.

According to him, Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, earned recognition as a dedicated detective before being caught up in corruption allegations. On his part, Tukur Mamu, a Kaduna-based publisher, was involved in mediating with bandits alongside Sheikh Ahmad Gumi in an effort to secure the freedom of abducted Nigerians.

Tebo argued that both men demonstrated a measure of patriotism in their service, but have been politically targeted, describing this as unjust. He stressed that Nigeria’s political climate often pits citizens against one another along tribal, religious and regional lines, a development he said undermines national unity.

He further cautioned political leaders against selective advocacy, urging them to place the interest of the nation above personal or sectional considerations.

“If calls for release are being made, they should also take into account individuals who have, in their own ways, worked for the safety and unity of the country,” he stated.

The Yobe-born PhD student, who commands a strong voice on social media, concluded by urging Nigerians to stand for justice in all cases, adding that fairness in the treatment of detainees would strengthen public trust in the country’s justice system.
