DSS Warns Public Against Dismissed Officer Impersonating Its Personnel
The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a public disclaimer alerting Nigerians to beware of one Victor Onyedikachi Godwin, a recently dismissed operative allegedly defrauding unsuspecting citizens while falsely presenting himself as a serving officer of the agency.
In a statement posted on October 12, 2025, the DSS described Godwin as an impersonator, cautioning members of the public against engaging with him or any other individual claiming affiliation with the agency without proper verification. The Service advised citizens to use its official contact line, 09088373515, for confirmation of identity or report of suspicious activities.
This warning marks the second alert in less than a week, following a similar notice issued on October 8 regarding ex-staff Barry Donald, who was also accused of using his past association with the DSS to defraud innocent Nigerians.
The repeated warnings highlight a disturbing trend of dismissed security personnel leveraging insider knowledge and former credentials to exploit public trust. Reports from national dailies such as Punch and Vanguard have drawn attention to this pattern, urging the DSS to intensify measures to monitor and prosecute such offenders.
Meanwhile, some observers have expressed concern over the agency’s handling of the matter, questioning why the said Godwin has not been apprehended despite public identification. This growing skepticism reflects wider unease about the DSS’s operational effectiveness in addressing internal misconduct alongside its high-profile political and intelligence cases.
As the DSS continues to warn against fraudulent elements, Nigerians are advised to remain vigilant and verify any security-related claims through the agency’s verified communication channels.
