Vocational School In Nasarawa Sustains Skills Training Amid Challenges — Calls For Government Intervention

The School for Vocational and Relevant Technology/Skills Acquisition, Nasarawa, has continued to make remarkable contributions in training students who are now excelling in various trades and professional fields, reinforcing the importance of vocational education in driving innovation and development in the 21st century.

Over the years, the institution has combined conventional secondary education with hands-on training in key technical areas including building technology, welding, woodwork, fashion design, electrical and electronics, among others. With its well-equipped workshops, the school has been grooming students with practical skills that prepare them for the workforce and entrepreneurship.

However, the school’s progress is being hampered by manpower and power shortages. The School Manager, Mr. Samuel Shade Sho, disclosed to Ideal Reporters that the institution has been facing staff shortages due to the retirement and demise of some teachers who are yet to be replaced.

He further lamented lack of power available to the school since it was cut off from the national grid, which had been affecting the school’s workshops, where most of the technical training depends on electricity.

“Our workshops rely heavily on power supply, and the prolonged electricity shortage has greatly affected our operations,” Mr. Sho said. “We appeal to the authorities at both the local and state levels to come to our aid to ensure continuity in our training programs.”

Despite these challenges, the school has remained active in producing school furniture such as desks, tables, and chairs for public institutions. Its quality products are also available for private schools, organizations, and individuals who wish to place orders.

Graduates of the school — including skilled carpenters, welders, electricians, and fashion designers — have become self-reliant professionals, contributing meaningfully to the economy and community development.

Given the global shift toward skills-based education, innovation, and technological advancement, experts and stakeholders have called on the Nasarawa State Ministries of Education and Science and Technology to give the school the necessary attention and support it deserves.

Such intervention, they argue, will not only sustain the school’s impact but also strengthen Nasarawa State’s drive toward building a technically empowered generation equipped to meet the demands of the modern economy.
