YET-TO-BE COMMISSIONED HEALTHCARE FACILITY IN NASARAWA BEGS FOR ATTENTION

A Primary Healthcare Center constructed by the Federal Government since 2021 at the site of the old General Hospital, Nasarawa, in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, remains uncommissioned and unused to date — a situation that has continued to worry residents and healthcare stakeholders across the area.

The modern facility, built under a Federal Government intervention to boost primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots, was expected to serve as a vital health center for thousands of people across the Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone. Nearly five years on, however, the building stands abandoned, with no equipment, staff, or sign of official commissioning.

A visit to the site by Ideal Reporters revealed the disturbing state of decay of the structure. The ceilings have collapsed in parts, sections of the roof were damaged by windstorm, and the entire compound has been overtaken by bush. What was once envisioned as a beacon of hope for improved rural healthcare has now become a symbol of neglect.

Residents lamented the continued abandonment of the project, stressing that its functionality would have eased the suffering of people in need of basic medical care. They noted that pregnant women, children, and the elderly often travel distances to access healthcare services, despite having a completed but idle facility within reach.

“This place used to be the old General Hospital,” said a community leader. “When the new building came up, we were excited that government remembered us. Sadly, it’s been years and the facility has not been put to use. It’s now falling apart.”

Health observers emphasized that the center, being the only one of its kind in Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone, could play a significant role in expanding access to healthcare and reducing pressure on existing medical facilities in the region.

They are therefore calling on the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nasarawa State Government, and the Nasarawa Local Government Council to take urgent steps to rehabilitate, equip, and commission the facility for public use.

With the growing demand for quality and accessible healthcare in rural communities, stakeholders insist that revitalizing the long-abandoned Primary Healthcare Center at the old General Hospital site in Nasarawa is not only necessary but also a moral obligation.

“The government must act now before this project becomes another forgotten investment,” a concerned resident appealed.
