Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

Machado was recognized for what the Committee described as her “tireless efforts to promote democracy and human rights in Venezuela” and for playing a central role in uniting the country’s fragmented opposition against authoritarian rule.

The 57-year-old engineer and politician rose to prominence as a co-founder of the civic group Súmate and later as leader of the liberal party Vente Venezuela. She won the opposition’s presidential primary in 2023 but was barred from running in the 2024 election after authorities imposed a political ban. Despite being sidelined and facing threats to her safety, she remains a symbolic leader of Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement.

Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes praised Machado as “a brave and committed champion of peace who keeps the flame of democracy burning.”

The prize will be formally presented at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10. Venezuelan authorities have not immediately commented on the award.
