Dangote Drives Energy Transition With Electric And CNG-Powered Trucks

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is taking bold steps towards sustainable business growth as the Dangote Group begins introducing electric trucks into its fleet.

The new initiative comes alongside the company’s deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for distributing refined fuel across Nigeria, marking a major shift from the use of conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Dangote, whose multi-billion-dollar investments span cement, sugar, and refining, is now steering his logistics operations toward cleaner and safer alternatives. Industry watchers say the move underscores his long-term commitment to modernising business practices while supporting global efforts to tackle climate change.

Speaking on the development, a Dangote Group official said: “Our aim is not only to strengthen efficiency in logistics but also to reduce our carbon footprint. By investing in electric and CNG-powered trucks, we are setting a new benchmark for sustainable business in Africa.”

Experts also believe the strategy will help reposition Africa in the fast-growing electric vehicle space, strengthening regional competitiveness and opening new opportunities for green industrialisation.

Dr. Halima Yusuf, an energy transition analyst, noted: “What Dangote is doing is more than corporate social responsibility. It is a strategic move that shows Africa can lead in climate-conscious innovation while keeping businesses profitable.”

With heavy investments already committed, Dangote’s transition to electric and CNG-powered trucks highlights his vision of coupling profitability with sustainability—an approach experts say is critical for Africa’s energy transition and future economic resilience.
