Tinubu Ends State Of Emergency In Rivers State
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the cessation of the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State, declaring that democratic governance will resume in the state from Wednesday, September 18, 2025.
In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, the President recalled that he had declared the emergency on March 18, 2025, following what he described as a total paralysis of governance in the state. He said the breakdown of relations between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly had stalled governance, disrupted peace, and threatened vital economic assets.
Tinubu explained that his intervention became necessary after efforts by his administration and other stakeholders to resolve the political impasse failed. The proclamation, he noted, led to the suspension of the governor, deputy governor, and state lawmakers for six months, pending the restoration of order.
According to the President, intelligence reports now indicate “a groundswell of new understanding” among stakeholders in the state, paving the way for the restoration of normal governance.
“It gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today. The Governor, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor, Her Excellency Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, will resume work in their offices from 18 September 2025,” Tinubu said.
The President expressed appreciation to the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and the people of Rivers State for their support during the emergency period. He also acknowledged dissenting voices and ongoing court cases challenging the proclamation, noting that such legal recourse is part of democratic practice.
Tinubu urged political leaders across the country to maintain harmony between the executive and legislature to ensure peace, stability, and the delivery of democratic dividends.
