Tinubu Renames UNIMAID After Late President Buhari, Declares His Absence Will Be Felt for Generations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday led a solemn session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja to honour the late President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13. During the ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, marking a historic tribute to a leader he described as a “man of discipline, patriotism, and unshakable conviction.”

The special FEC session brought together key members of the Tinubu administration, including cabinet ministers, two state governors, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Head of Civil Service, alongside members of the late President’s family and associates.

President Tinubu, delivering a deeply personal and emotional tribute, said the void left by the late president would be felt across generations. He described Buhari as a man of “quiet courage” whose commitment to integrity and selfless leadership earned him enduring respect across political and ideological lines.

"Today, we gather under a heavy shadow, drawn from the silence that surrounds a departed leader and the immense weight of a life whose absence will be felt for generations," Tinubu said. "President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, was a man of piety, principle, and patriotism—a life lived in full service to Nigeria and in fidelity to God."

He praised Buhari’s role as a civil war veteran, military Head of State, and two-term civilian President, stating that his discipline, incorruptibility, and moral clarity will remain guiding principles for Nigerian leaders to emulate.

In a significant revelation during the session, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, shared a letter written by Buhari on June 9, 2022, to the APC Governors Forum in support of Tinubu’s presidential bid following the party’s primaries.

“Our candidate, His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is no stranger to you. He is our friend and brother… We know his commitment, his track record and his capacity to lead our party to success,” Buhari wrote, contradicting notions that he had remained indifferent to Tinubu’s ambition.

Other dignitaries and government officials paid heartfelt tributes.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio described Buhari as "a principled man who gave everything to a country that demanded everything of him," while House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called him "a symbol of quiet strength and a model of modest, values-driven leadership."

Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq hailed Buhari as "a patriot and statesman whose legacy will endure in Nigeria’s democratic and institutional foundations."

Ministers including Dele Alake, Ali Pate, Dave Umahi, Festus Keyamo, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, and Didi Walson-Jack also delivered moving reflections on Buhari’s unwavering integrity and commitment to national service.

Representing the Buhari family, Yusuf Buhari expressed deep appreciation for the national outpouring of love and respect, thanking President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their constant support, especially during the late President’s final days.

“It showed that he was regarded not just as a politician, but as a father to all,” Yusuf Buhari stated.

The renaming of the University of Maiduguri marks a permanent national tribute to a man whose ideals, as President Tinubu affirmed, “were lived more in action than in words.”
