ADC Congratulates New APC Chairman, Urges Respect for Democratic Norms
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has extended its congratulations to Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda on his appointment as the new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while cautioning him to uphold democratic values and respect the boundaries between party politics and state affairs.
In a press statement issued on Friday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described Professor Yilwatda’s emergence as the APC’s fourth chairman in two years as “yet another opportunity” for the ruling party to recommit to participatory democracy and more inclusive governance.
“While we understand that leadership transitions are routine,” the statement read, “we are hopeful that this particular appointment might trigger a shift in tone, temperament, and trajectory for a party that has too often equated governance with propaganda, and power with impunity.”
The ADC said it expects the new APC Chairman to encourage greater tolerance for opposition voices, noting that disagreement in a democracy should not be equated with sabotage or subversion.
The party also took issue with the location of the APC’s recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was held inside the State House—a government facility funded by taxpayers—rather than at a party office or neutral venue.
Describing the move as “an aberration,” the ADC said it illustrates the ruling party’s ongoing tendency to blur the line between party and state. “We urge the new Chairman to guide his party towards respecting that line — now dangerously blurred,” it added.
The statement further highlighted Professor Yilwatda’s past experience as a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), noting that this background comes with a weight of responsibility and understanding of electoral neutrality.
“We sincerely hope he will draw on this experience to promote the sanctity of our electoral processes, rather than using insider knowledge to game the system in favour of his party, as has often been the case under the APC’s watch,” the ADC said.
Concluding its message, the party expressed its hope for a more honourable and stable leadership period under Professor Yilwatda, saying: “We pray that his tenure be longer than those of his predecessors and his exit more honourable.”
Professor Yilwatda was announced as the new APC Chairman during the party’s NEC meeting held earlier this week, replacing Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
