Man Jailed for 21 Years for Raping 3-Month-Old Baby in Nasarawa

Justice has finally caught up with Ahmadu Yaro, a 27-year-old man found guilty of raping a three-month-old baby in Adogi village, Lafia Local Government Area, following a judgment delivered at the Nasarawa State High Court on Friday.

Presiding over the case, the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu, described the act as “demonic, barbaric, and a stain on the moral conscience of humanity,” before handing Yaro a 21-year prison sentence without the option of a fine.

The assault, which occurred in 2020, sparked national outrage and demands for swift justice. After five years of trial, the sentencing marks a significant milestone in the fight against sexual violence in Nigeria.

In an uncommon but powerful show of commitment, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Isaac Danladi, personally appeared in court to lead the prosecution team, alongside Mrs. Justina Alkali Allu, Director of Public Defender. His presence drew commendations from the legal community and observers.

Prominent legal practitioner, Barr. Mohammed Nda Yako (SAN), who was in court on unrelated business, hailed the Attorney General’s involvement as a “mark of true leadership and dedication to justice.”

Addressing journalists after the verdict, Barr. Danladi expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.

“This is a clear signal that Nasarawa State maintains a zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence, especially against children. The judiciary has once again upheld its role as a defender of justice,” he said.

He further reiterated the state government’s commitment under Governor Abdullahi A. Sule to pursue justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, vowing that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.

The verdict has been widely welcomed by civil society groups, community leaders, and concerned citizens who see it as a turning point in the protection of vulnerable persons, particularly in rural communities.

Ahmadu Yaro is to serve his sentence at a state correctional facility in Nasarawa.
