FG Declares Tuesday, July 15 Public Holiday in Honour of Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

This was announced in a statement issued by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

The declaration comes as part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier proclaimed by President Tinubu to mark the passing of the former Head of State, who died in London on Saturday, July 13, 2025.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the holiday as a mark of respect for Buhari’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, national development, and public service.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

He urged Nigerians to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by fostering peace, patriotism, and national unity—principles the late President consistently championed during his lifetime.

As previously directed, national flags across the country are to be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period, from Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The Federal Government also extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The statement was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior.
