Tinubu Administration Launches Discounted CNG Pricing to Boost Affordable Clean Transportation

In a decisive move to fast-track Nigeria’s shift toward cleaner and more affordable energy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has launched a nationwide Concessionary Pricing Framework for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The new pricing structure, rolled out under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), was officially unveiled during a flag-off ceremony in Abuja.

The framework introduces a special discounted rate for autogas CNG, offering prices substantially lower than those for industrial and power-sector gas. This strategic pricing is a key component of President Tinubu’s broader energy policy, designed to drive mass adoption of CNG-powered vehicles while eliminating market distortions caused by gas arbitrage.

Since its inception in 2023, the PCNGI has spurred significant growth in Nigeria’s CNG ecosystem, expanding from just 20 daughter stations to over 65 nationwide. The private sector has responded enthusiastically, with major players such as the Dangote Group committing to further investments in the sector. The Tinubu administration aims to have at least one million CNG vehicles on Nigerian roads by 2027.

This initiative supports the Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting sustainable mobility, lowering transportation costs for citizens, advancing environmental sustainability, and fostering robust public-private partnerships for infrastructure development.
