SIMON EKPA'S EXTRADITION WIL COME AT THE RIGHT TIME - ATTORNEY GENERAL
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has announced that the Nigerian government is collaborating closely with Finnish authorities to secure the extradition of Simon Ekpa for prosecution over alleged offences against the country’s national security and sovereignty.
Speaking on Thursday during the quarterly stakeholders and citizen's engagement programme held at the Ministry of Justice Headquarters in Abuja, Fagbemi assured stakeholders that the government is committed to bringing Ekpa to justice.
“Simon Ekpa’s offence is a cross-border offence. If he committed an offence there and committed another one here, we cannot request his release to us until they have dealt with him. After that, we can request his extradition,” Fagbemi stated.
He added, “He committed an offence against the Finnish government as well as in Nigeria. His extradition will come at the right time.”
Ekpa, a Nigerian who base in Finland is a separatist advocate and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has been accused of inciting violence in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
The Nigerian government has accused Ekpa of having links with the activities of “unknown gunmen,” who have carried out deadly attacks in the South-East under the pretex of freeing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained IPOB leader.
Ekpa was arrested in November , 2024 in Finland alongside four others who later got released.
His case is currently under review by Finland’s Deputy Prosecutor General, who will determine whether he faces charges in Finland or should be extradited to his country, Nigeria.
The Nigerian government has long condemned Ekpa’s online broadcasts and directives, which they believe have fueled unrest and undermined national security.
His extradition has become a focal point in ongoing efforts to curb separatist violence in the country’s Southeast.
