PADDOCK CLAIMS TWO LIVES AS SIBLINGS DROWN IN UDEGE-MBEKI COMMUNITY
On Thursday, the family of Muhammad Ibrahim and the people of Udege-Mbeki were thrown into mourning as Umar Muhammad and Ibrahim Muhammad drowned in the ancient Paddock, consequently losing their lives.
The community has expressed deep concern given that similar incidents have been recurring for sometime. Overflow of the Paddock, a large water body artificially created by Japanese Mining Company for the processing of minerals been mined in the area.
The failure to reclaim a sizeable portion earlier excavated by the Kenyang Mining Company, Udege-Mbeki has been attributed to the unfortunate incident. Such failure by the company and its attendant consequences on the host community has raised serious concerns leading to litigation.
Abuse of Mining Act and neglect to effect Community Development Agreement if any, by foreign mining companies has become an issue for most communities hosting them.
The Nasarawa States and Federal Governments have been charged to rise to the occasion, to enforce strict compliance in order to save lives and avoid environmental degradation usually caused by exploration.
