DONALD TRUMP HAS ACHIEVED THE IMPOSSIBLE
By Navy Commodore Yahaya Ownua (RTD)
Only one former American President, Glover Cleveland, was able to do so, after his defeat in 1888.
In fact, Cleveland was an antithesis of Trump. He was a mayor, an anti corruption crusader, who never broke any law.
Prior to 2016 Trump had never smelled public office, but rather a billionaire showman, with little scruples.
How can a man who lost election four years ago return to power so triumphantly, in spite of the road blocks? Many of his party men and women distanced themselves from him. With lots of legal battles confronting him. With not too good moral conduct. It shows all these do not matter when the chips are down. And these mean a lot to the American people.
First, the two candidates: Trump is a white male. In a country that is still predominantly white, there is a lot of scepticism on a black candidate, who is also a woman. We saw the same thing in 2016. America is not Britain that has become inclusive in terms of gender and race.
Second is the issues in the elections. Economic state with high cost of living was a major factor. While Harris is known for her high moral ground and a tough law czar, her path wasn't too clear on what mattered most to the Americans, which is the economy.
Closely related to this is the issue of immigration. No wonder, Trump won the states of Georgia, Nevada, Arizona who face large scale illegal immigration. Biden won these same states four years ago.
Harris' focus was on abortion, LGBTQ and other rights. These same issues were abhorrent to the powerful evangelicals and other minorities. They were popular among the young men and women, who might not necessarily, come out in large number to vote.
The black men weren't too enthusiastic about voting massively for a democrat this time as they hitherto did. Their lots haven't changed much in spite of their fidelity with the party.
Looks like the Americans aren't too enthusiastic about the country's involvement in many conflicts, be it in the Middle East or Ukraine. They are looking for a different pathway.
The rest of the world might think differently.
But the strong tendency for individualism, freedom of action, unhindered self conviction have made American elections different from others.
If the present doesn't favour them, they wouldn't mind going back to the past
They have done this once before. Whether this one would favour them, only time will tell.
