GOBIR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION DEMANDS RECOVERY OF BODY OF SLAINED MONARCH FOR PROPER BURIAL
Following the killing of the of Sarkin Gobir and District Head of Gatawa, Alh. Isa Muhammad Bawa by bandits on 21st August 2024, which sad event was marked by the withholding of his corpse, Gobir Development Association (GDA) has urged both Federal and Sokoto State governments to retrieve the remains of their monarch for proper burial.
The monarch who was abducted alongside his son, Kabiru Isa, while returning from a meeting at the Sultanate Palace in Sokoto on 27th July 2024 suffered brutality and dehumanization in the hands of his abductors before they finally killed him.
The Gobir Development Association expressed frustration with government's inaction during a press briefing in Kano.
Professor Iliyasu Yusuf Gobir, the GDA Spokesman said, "The Hausa people, especially those from Gobir, have demonstrated patience and restraint amidst ongoing provocations and violence. However, our patience is wearing thin."
He called on the government to address lingering security situation, particularly in Sokoto East and Sabon Birni areas, and demanded immediate recovery of the monarch's body.
“The Gobir Kingdom demands that the Federal and Sokoto State Governments to use all available resources to ensure the return of Sarkin Gobir’s body so that his people can give him a dignified burial,” Professor Gobir added.
Earlier, Salutul Gha'ib was observed on the monarch, as his body was not returned to his family and the Kingdom.
The GDA further highlighted increasing number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) due to ongoing violence, called on government to provide relief and address their needs.
