LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL CHAIRMEN IN OYO STATE WITHDRAW FROM ASSOCIATION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS OF NIGERIA (ALGON), DEMAND PAYMENT OF FEDERAL ALLOCATION THROUGH STATE GOVERNOR
The 33 Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State have announced their withdrawal from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).
This decision followed Supreme Court ruling in favour of Local Government Autonomy, directing that fund be paid directly to Local Government Accounts as against State Government's, which used to be the case.
Obviously dissatisfied with this development, the Chairmen chose to establish their own Association in their State, separate from ALGON, the national umbrella body for Local Governments in the country.
The move, Ideal Reporters gathered, is not unconnected to Governor Seyi Makinde's earlier statement, in which he appeared to reject the Supreme Court's ruling, stating that the Federal Government cannot dictate how the state will run its affairs.
The Chairmen are insisting on receiving their Allocations through the State Government, despite Supreme Court's ruling.
Ideal Reporters gathered that the said Chairmen are only acting the script of the Governor who is not comfortable with the Supreme Court judgement.
The indigenous people of Oyo across 33 Local Governments wish for Supreme Court judgement to prevail, guaranteeing financial Autonomy to the Local Governments thereby giving them room to fund impactful projects and programs without undue influence or maneuver by the Governor.
