PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU APPROVES N70,000 AS NEW MINIMUM WAGE FOR WORKERS

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday approved N70,000 as new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

This development was announced by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Media Aide to the President on his X handle, formerly Twitter.

The statement reads: “Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.

“President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.

“ President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days.

“The Labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for the fatherly gesture as the President also promised to use his discretionary powers meet the demands of university unions demanding unpaid 4 months salaries.”

The Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage recently submitted figures to the President as the organised private sector and the government team had offered to pay N62,000.

However, the organised labour insisted on N250,000.

Following the disagreement, the President had delayed sending any figure to the National Assembly through an Executive Bill.

At Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, Tinubu had asked the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, to draft a bill to amend the 2024 budget to accommodate a new minimum wage.
