Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nigerian Association of Road Transport Workers (NARTO), Mass Transit, Motorcycle Association, all from Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have come together to distance selves from the protest while calling on the general public to do same.
This decision is contained in a statement made available to Ideal Reporters. The statement, signed by Mal. Isah Bala on behalf of leadership of the Unions suggests says the protest is believed to be championed by faceless persons with sinister motives to break block roads, break into shops, parks, offices and residences to cause destruction.
While recognizing the Constitutional rights of citizens to protest peacefully, the Joint Unions noted that available reports points to possible attack on members, and so call for restraint. They unanimously agreed to not render services to any group between August 1 to August 10 without obtaining proper record, aim of movement and Police approval.
The statement which was copied to the Chairman, Nasarawa Local Government Council, Hon. Mohammed Sani Otto, Nasarawa Area Command, Nigeria Police Force, Divisional Police Officer, Nasarawa Division, Nigeria Police and Department of State Service reads;
"Following joint emergency meeting of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mass Transit, Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and Motorcycle Association, which held at Nasarawa Central Park, Nasarawa Local Government Area, Nasarawa State on Sunday, 28th July, 2024, the following resolutions were reached;
1. That the Joint Union has observed with keen interest, development surrounding the widely publicized nationwide protest scheduled to commence on August, 1st, and has come to realize that;
i. Leaders of the said protest are not known, as they have remained faceless.
ii. The protest has sinister motives of breaking into shops, parks, offices, residences and blocking roads, thereby causing destructions.
iii. That member Unions are most likely to be directly affected by inherent violence which usually characterized previous protests, believing the one in question would not be an exception.
iv. That government is taking bold and realistic steps towards relieving citizens from economic hardship, rendering the call to protest void of merit.
2. In view of the above, having recognized the Constitutional rights of citizens to protest peacefully, the Unions distances selves from proposed nationwide protest while calling on the general public to do same in order not to jeopardize the peace that reigns, hoping that initiatives put in place by government would bear fruits soonest.
3. The Joint Union has mandated members to not render their services to anyone within the stipulated period (August 1st to 10th) without proper records of individuals, their whereabouts and aim.
4. That upon discovering plan to protest, members shall seize to render their services, save otherwise Police approval is presented to that effect."
