NIGERIANS CALL ON LABOUR UNION, CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS, OTHERS TO HOLD GOVERNORS TO ACCOUNT

Since Media report on Nigerian Governors saying N60,000 minimum wage proposal was "too much", which statement suggested they may not pay such amount to their respective States Civil Servants, Nigerians have been expressed pain, calling on all concerned to hold the Governors to account.

This is happening amid multi-dimensional hardship citizens are facing since subsidy removal on fuel, increase in electricity tariff and tuition fees by the Tinubu Administration, for which reason, Organized Labour is demanding for increase in minimum wage or reversal to old prices.

While Federal Government is slugging it out with Labour, a development that has resulted in nationwide strike, with Labour shutting down national grid, water supply to National Assembly, Banks, Schools, Courts, Secretariats among others, in a bid to enforce total compliance.

Following interventions by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, National Security Adviser to the President and the National Assembly, led to Labour conditionally relaxing ongoing strike at the time.

Building up to the negotiation process, as both Labour and countrymen look forward to higher living wage that would see to citizens living fairly well, the Governors suddenly declared that N60,000 is too much. It should be noted however, that, their Edo counterpart has begun payment of N70,000 minimum wage.

Consequent upon their statement, angry Nigerians see them as the problem. Speaking to Ideal Reporters, anonymous persons said same Governor's have failed to account for increase in their allocations following subsidy removal by the present Administration and bailout by the past Administration.

A source said the same Governors have continued to frustrate full autonomy for local governments, using the instrument of States legislature.

Reflecting on this development, the Media reported that in 3 months only, 30 Governors spend N968 billion on refreshments, meaning the said Governors are used to extravagance, feeding fat on public funds while showing indifference to the poor condition of living of the people they govern.

Another source called on Labour, Civil Society Organizations, and the general public to call Governors to account. "They owe us good governance, since that is why they are elected to deliver". - he said. He pointed to escalation of insecurity, unemployment rate and hunger as indication of lack of performance on the side of Governors, whom he said should be held responsible going forward.
