LAND DISPUTE IN MARARABA-UDEDEGE CLAIMED LIVES
Mararaba-Udege, the Administrative Headquarter of Udege Development Area in Nasarawa State has been thrown into land dispute, translating into loss of lives and properties.
The dispute involving Afo/Eloyi speaking people started last year with Ebbeh side insisting on coronating their Chief, to whom all Ambu people in and around Mararaba will be answerable. Earlier, the warring parties were involved in leadership squabble over Mararaba Central Market and Vigilante Group.
The situation got worse two months ago when the two sides clashed over a parcel of land, with both sides; Ebbeh and Odu people claiming ownership. This led to the killing of one Ahmed Sama'ila Ekpeji on March 18, 2024.
The once peaceful, accommodating and industrious Mararaba community witnessed serial killings on May 2, 2024 a situation that has ended no fewer than twelve lives, including the Community Head of Ebbeh. Houses were razed down and valuable properties were destroyed.
While military personnel have been deployed to the area, there is panic across, as neighbouring communities, particularly Udege-Mbeki and Odu are restless following unconfirmed information pointing to possible attack on them. Many were seen fleeing to Nasarawa, Keffi and other places in search of safety.
This development is worrisome considering the long harmony that existed between the now sworn enemies. Nasarawa Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Mohammed Sani Otto has reiterated government position of no comprise on peace. At the begging of the crisis, he was sighted touring round affected areas, calming the people, while assuring them of prompt intervention.
Anonymous source who spoke to Ideal Reporters related that in one of security meetings convened by the Council Chairman, a peace pact was signed by respective leaders of these communities, "why this, he wondered ?".
