WARD ATTENDANTS OF FEDERAL TEACHING HOSPITAL, LOKOJA PROTEST COLLEAGUE'S DEATH
Angered by what they described as act of negligence by medics of Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja leading to loss of their colleague, Salamatu Aliu of post-natal Ward, Ward Attendants have protested, decrying the way and manner they are being treated.
The protesters, Ideal Reporters gathered called on Federal Ministery of Health to beam its searchlight on the hospital.
Opening up on events that led to the protest, one of the protesters who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that their colleague “Salamatu Aliu was rushed to the hospital for medical attention on Sunday evening after her seven days night shift but was not immediately attended to and instead was referred to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja by the doctors and nurses on duty who cited absence of power supply and a general lack of electricity as their excuse for being unable to attend to her".
“Sadly, Aliu died upon getting to the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja before any form of medical care could be administered to her.” - our source added.
The protesting Ward Attendants alleged that it was the needles nonchalant and uncaring attitude of medics at the hospital that got one of them and indeed, many others killed, something they said is unbecoming.
They further lamented negligence to duty by doctors and nurses particularly at the Accident and Emergency section. “These unwholesome practices and attitude of these doctors and nurses which has now ‘needlessly’ claimed one of our own is what has necessitated the peaceful protest by the Ward Attendants,” - another source revealed.
It took the intervention of some senior health workers involving in the supporting arms of the hospital to calm the fray and douse the tension, with assurances of proper investigation of events that built-up to the death of Aliu. Only few months back, similar incidence occurred, resulting in the beating of some medical personnel by relatives of patient who died due to what was alleged to be negligence to duty.
