THE HIKE IN ELECTRICITY TARIFF WILL CREATE MORE DIFFICULTIES FOR CITIZENS - ATIKU ABUBAKAR
Since emergence of news with regards to increase in electricity tariff for Band A customers, Nigerians have been reacting. Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria's leading opposition candidate in the 2023 presidential election under the platform of People's Democratic Party is not left out.
Reacting to the recent development, the former Vice President and opposition candidate stated that "The increase in electricity tariff comes at a time when Nigerian citizens are going through excruciating difficulties occasioned by the withdrawal of subsidy on PMS and floating of the domestic currency".
He further noted that "As usual, the government is unleashing another dose of reforms without adequate notice and without an adequate post-reform plan to mitigate the pain", Atiku called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to "ensure that these reforms are sequenced, then measures to mitigate the pain, and hold the NERC responsible for ensuring improved service delivery.
Expressing concern over state of the economy, which he said is being pushed into deeper crisis in view of hike in electricity tariff, he equally observed that Nigerian manufacturing sector will be negatively impacted given the high interest rate they have to pay for bank loans, high cost of purchasing diesel and paying higher wages.
In his words " The hike in electricity tariff will create more difficulties for the citizens as inflationary pressures are elevated. Our manufacturing sector will similarly be impacted negatively".
On his part, the Minister of Power, Adelabu, in his Ministerial Press Briefing stated that removal of subsidy would be a journey rather than destination and that it would be a gradual migration from subsidy regime to a full cost reflective tariff regime. "The government decided not to migrate to a cost reflective tariff or remove subsidy 100 per cent because it was sensitive to the pains being experienced by Nigerians presently" he further asserted.
