FEDERAL MINISTRY OF SOLID MINERALS DEVELOPMENT HELD SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME ON REVISED GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT IN NASARAWA
The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in collaboration with African Center for Leadership, Strategy and Development has organized sensitization programme on the revised guidelines for Community Development Agreement (CDA) Wednesday at the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa.
The programme which brought together Mineral Title Holders, Host Communities and various Stakeholders in in the mining sector featured presentations and guide for accessing Mobile Webb App through which the general public can obtain relevant information and lodge their complaints directly to the ministry.
Speaking at the event, the Director, Mine Environmental Compliance, Ministery of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Mrs Okon Vivian noted that revising the 2014 guidelines became necessary due to gaps leading to series of petitions and complaints from respective communities. She advised that mining companies and their host communities live in harmony, with both sides discharging their obligations as required by law.
Hon. Idris Musa Gomna, Deputy Chairman, Nasarawa Local Government Council, Nasarawa State who represented his Principal, Hon. Mohammed Sani Otto appreciated the ministry for undertaking to sensitize the people, noting that Nasarawa Local Government Area is richly endowed with mineral resources and has so, attracts domestic and international investors.
Stating that Hon. Mohammed Sani Otto led Administration has provided conducive working environment for investors while not compromising the needs and rights of host and affected communities. He assured that government will continue to support the realization of full mining potentials in the Area and the country at large.
Nasarawa State Mining Association, Nigerian Union of Mines Workers, Mining Companies operating in Nasarawa State, Communities hosting mining companies, Artisan Miners and members of Traditional Institutions took part in the programme.
Entertaining questions from participants, Mrs Pani Kulu Saratu, Asst. Director, Mine Environmental Compliance emphasized the need for CDA's and Environmental and Social Impacts Assessment to be carried out by mining companies. She added that CDA has the potential of promoting and sustaining mutually rewarding benefits for investors and their host communities.
Ideal Reporters gathered that communities were advised to avoid selling their lands to investors, rather, they should lease then out. Participants who spoke to our correspondent expressed satisfaction with the programme - as it was informing.
