HIGH COST OF GOVERNANCE FORMS PART OF REASONS FOR INCREASED COST OF LIVING
Nigerians are battling with increased cost of living amid rising unemployment and insecurity. With hike in price of fuel and electricity tariff, even when its supply is epileptic, coupled with tax on enterprises, business are winding down on daily basis, and more people are losing their jobs.
While this is happening, general expectation is for government to come up with realistic measures that would ameliorate the situation. One of these measures, as have been pointed out on many occasions, is reduced cost of governance. With increased cost of governance in the face of stark reality, Nigerians are finding it difficult to trust the system.
Kebbi State is on the lamblight following Gov. Nasir Idris' purchase and distribution of SUV cars to members of the State House of Assembly just when insecurity, hunger, illiteracy and poor healthcare delivery system have taken the center stage. The State has 95% multi demensional poverty, high Infant and Child Mortality Rate, with very low life expectancy and high child nutritional problems, ranking 34th out of 36 States.
Kebbi State citizens have expressed dissatisfaction with this development in view of the State's debt profile of $40.1million foreign debt and N61. 3 billion domestic debt. "Distribution the said cars to State lawmakers at this trying times is senseless, to say the least" said an anonymous source who spoke to Ideal Reporters. Channeling resources to the benefit of the citizens is the right thing to do.
