I INHERITED $587m, N85bn DEBT - SEN. UBA SANI REVEALED
Kaduna state governor, Sen. Uba Sani has revealed that his Administration inherited a heavy debt to the tune of $587m, N85bn and 115 contractual liabilities from previous Administration of Mal. Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa'i. The governor disclosed this Saturday in a Town Hall meeting. "It gladdened my heart to inform you that, despite the huge inherited debt on the state, till date, we have not borrowed a single kobo".
He however expressed that the state is finding it difficult to pay salaries owing to debt resettlement. According to him, N7bn out of the N10bn due to the state from Federal Allocation for the month of March was deducted to service the debt.
Lamenting that the state was left with N3bn, an amount which is not enough to pay salaries, as the state’s monthly salary bill stands at N5.2bn, Sani however, assured that the debt burden notwithstanding, his Administration remain resolute in steering the state towards progress and sustainable development, as the government has conducted thorough assessment of the situation and it is sharpening its focus accordingly.
Sani's revelation generated mixed reactions, typical of Nigerian politics. While some Kaduna citizens, particularly his ardent supporters/loyalists felt he was right to have disclosed this, moreso it explains the low pace of activities expected of him, others believe it is purely politics, and that Sani might be acting a script for the Presidency.
Ideal Reporters has gathered that Presidency is gittery of late moves made by the ex-governor viz-aviz his recent romance with the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) and unusual consultations across the country, not leaving former Nigerian leaders, traditional heads and top ranking politicians.
A source further revealed to Ideal Reporters that Presidency and the rulling All Progressives Congress have divulged plans by Mal. Nasir El-Rufa'i to work side by side Peter Obi, former Anambra state governor and 2023 Presidential candidate for the Labour Party to fight President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Can Uba Sani stand the heat, remain the question only time shall tell.
