NIGERIAN CUSTOMS SERVICE COMMENCE SALE OF FORFEITED FOOD ITEMS
Following high cost of foodstuffs in the country and its attendant hardship, the Nigerian Customs Service has commence sale of forfeited food items - as part of its commitment to bring relief to citizens.
The items, Ideal Reporters gathered comprises over 20,000 bags of assorted grains, including rice which is auctioned at N10,000 per bag, beans, maize, guinea corn, millet and soyabean. Others are 2,500 cartons as well as 963 bags of dried fish. Equally, dried pepper, maggi, tomatoes, macroni, cooking oil, salt, sugar form part of the food items up for sale.
Addressing the Press in Lagos, during inauguration of nationwide sale of food items to Nigerians, Comptroller General, NCS, Bashir Adeniyi underscore the need to safeguard food security and see to its availability and affordability. He said it is in view of this that government gave approval for distribution of food items fit for consumption at discounted rate.
Artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies and other deserving Nigerians are the main target beneficiaries. They are expected to present National Identify Cards before securing the said items.
Adeniyi further lamented over the surge of outflow of food items to neighbouring countries, stating that it strain Nigeria's productive capacity and jeopardize food security.
