ENSURING FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA

With first rain experienced in some States in Nigeria, raining season is knocking on our doors. This season, expectedly, may witness mass production of food, considering ongoing hardship citizens are passing through, brought about by subsidy removal and rise in exchange rate, translating into high cost of foodstuffs.

Nigerians have continued to express dismay over the development, with many of them taking to the streets to protest against the unbearable situation. The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alh. Sa'ad Abubakar lll had earlier called on government to do something about the situation - as citizens are rising up against hunger and unemployment.

To arrest the disturbing situation, government at all levels, including corporate organizations are expected to adopt measures that would increase food sufficiency, reduce cost of transportation, increase production and create more jobs. To this end, Niger State Governor, Umar Bago has procured 300 tractors, 1000 hand helds, is still expecting over 1000 more tractors and irrigation kits in the next 6 months.

"This is the only way for us as a people and as country" - he stated. He further added that "Because we are agrarian, we gauni reason to be poor ". Already, Niger State Government has cleared a million heaters of land, is both willing and ready to partner with farmers and investors to better enhance food prosperity.

Investing hugely in Agriculture, especially making farming all year round activity will greatly improve food production, making foodstuffs readily available and cheaper, while creating jobs in the process. Other State Governors, have been urged to follow similar pattern by citizens who spoke to Ideal Reporters.

Timely provision of fertilizer at affordable rate to farmers, introducing them to modem technics and availing them with improved varieties of seedlings, Ideal Reporters has gathered would also help boost production.
