NASARAWA RESIDENTS DECRY SELLING RICE, MAIZE, OTHERS TO BUSINESSMEN OUTSIDE NASARAWA STATE
Residents of Nasarawa community and its environ in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have decried selling rice, maize, and other food items to businessmen outside the State who, on market days, Mondays and Fridays, come to buy in bulk (tonnes), causing scarcity and unnecessary hike in price.
No fewer than six to seven trucks usually load these items, take them away, which event affects their availability, hence the ever increasing cost. Nasarawa Local Government Area, particularly Agatu communities in Loko Development Area, is reputable for rice farming, with the capacity to provide more than enough to cater for the need of the State, if supported.
Mararaba-Udege and Nasarawa Central markets are the major selling points of rice and maize commodities, aside Udege-Mbeki, Loko, Akum, Ajaga and Ara markets. Rice sellers, mostly women, have been complaining about businessmen coming from other States to load off the commodities, leaving them with little and compelling them to buy at exorbitant price.
Hearing from those who come to the market to buy foodstuffs, Ideal Reporters gathered that they wish government would find means to stop the selling of these items to those coming from far away Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara Enugu and Anambra States - since their action creates artificial scarcity and worsen their already harsh condition of living.
"These items are taken away to be rebagged, hoarded and eventually returned to the market when they are no longer available" - disclosed a buyer who pleaded anonymity. Another added that "It won't bespeak of us if we insist on selling to those from within, who are in dire need, instead of those coming to buy only to hoard them and make our condition really bad".
